The Psychology of Colour – What Colour Should you Paint That Room?

When we re-decorate, our choice of colour should say something about us. We can’t keep changing it, so it’s important to get it right first time.

If you’re looking for peace, plump for pink or lilac. Of course, green is the ultimate in relaxation – think of the actor’s Green Room in a theatre – but blue also has a calming effect.

Like the colour of sunshine, yellow will keep you cheerful, while orange has a reassuring warmth. Or turn to purple to encourage creativity. Red brings to mind; energy, optimism and passion. If, on the other hand, you crave security, you may prefer brown.

Some of these will need to be balanced with contrasts – use grey to define pink or lilac, for example, and bright shades to enliven brown or neutral schemes. Accessorise with orange to warm predominantly green or blue rooms or include paler areas for coolness amongst fiery reds.

Use your paint chart as a palette to reflect your personality!
