Penarth Marina Footbridge

SYNOPSIS

Penarth Marina FootbridgeThortech International Bridges & Marine undertook a resurfacing project in Penarth, Cardiff with the new footbridge requiring safe anti-slip surfacing for the general public making the journey across. Thortech International were commissioned to install Resin Bonded surfacing to the whole area measuring 120m2 in total.

BRIEF

Penarth Marina Footbridge is based in Cardiff and an important crossing supplying access to the local amenities. New, reliable surfacing was required so the footbridge could provide a safe crossing for the public, consisting of cycle and pedestrian traffic.

Thortech International Bridges & Marine was commissioned to install the project on behalf of TEMA Engineering.

PROCESS

To prepare the bridge for its new surfacing an STR Machine was used to remove all of the red oxidised metal. Structures were then encapsulated prior to open shot blasting using environmentally friendly garnet as an abrasive. Shot blasting was then completed to the underlying steel deck with the steel being prepared to SA2.5 standard prior to being immediately coated with Acraprime.

After the Acraprime had cured, the application consisted of Thortech’s chosen anti-skid system dressed with 1<3mm Hardened Red aggregate. After the system had cured the surface was swept thoroughly to ensure there was no loose remaining aggregate left on the bridge structure.

OUTCOME

Penarth Marina Footbridge
The re-surfacing projected was completed in June 2006 on time and on-budget, with the footbridge installed remaining an important hub in the area to this day.

Below is a photo taken on the 4th January 2017 of the footbridge in its current state a whole 11 years later, showing it is still in good condition with only slight signs of expected wear and tear from its constant daily use.
