RS Clare’s Bimagrip HD Anti-slip and Waterproofing System Acraprime, Guyanese Bauxite & Polysulphide Joint Sealant

Thortech Bridges & Marine were chosen by Peter Brett Associates in coordination with Hollandia and Balfour Beatty to carry out the Bimagrip HD application to the pedestrian and cycle footbridge, post-installation over the River Thames.

The first footbridge to be installed over the Thames in nearly 90 years was chosen by Peter Brett Associates to be Thortech Bridges & Marine; site operatives installed Bimagrip HD a 3 component system — The combined waterproofing, wearing course and high friction surfacing to the Pedestrian & Cycle footbridge on site over the River Thames whilst other minimal engineering works were still ongoing.

Using RS Clare’s highly developed resin technology, Bimagrip HD is a selection of high-grade abrasion resistant aggregates held together with specially formulated polyurethane resins, the economical solution is designed to give strength, flexibility, and long life durability that protects bridge decks and requires minimal maintenance.

The bridge deck was prepared and primed with a holding primer by Hollandia operatives prior to Thortech Bridges & Marine’s arrival on site. Deck preparation is carried out in order to achieve a SA2.5 finish to ensure the highest level of adhesion, removing any rust, dirt or scale. After arrival, the bridge deck was then scarified to remove the holding primer applied then primed using RS Clare’s single component rust inhibiting solvent based polyurethane priming system to protect the steelwork from corrosion and to enhance the bond between the Bimagrip HD system and the deck.

The system for this project was chosen to be at 2.7kg/m2 resin loading for the task and was chosen with 0.9-1.4mm Guyanan Bauxite aggregate to provide a robust and durable finish.

The project was a success, with Thortech Bridges & Marine proud to have contributed to this unique structure. Not only providing a new north-south route for walkers and cyclists – and electric wheelchairs – from Caversham to Norman Place and Reading Station for the local community but even being tipped by the Mayor at the bridge opening Cllr Page a “destination in its own right”.
